Once upon a time a rat was living on the roof of a man's house with her newly born pups. The owner of the house is a carpenter by profession and he has two sons whom he also taught the carpentery skills. The roof of this house have been faulty for a long time, the man has done several maintenance on it but all to no avail so he has to move his family and property out of the house pending when the whole roof will be changed.
Seeing what happened, the rat and her children became so happy that at last they could experience freedom, and so be it that from that day they lived happily without fear or boundaries because they now occupy the whole house.
The rat used to go out daily into the forest to fetch food for her little children. One day she came back from the forest, she noticed that her children were looking afraid and worried, so she asked them what it was all about, What happened? Why are your faces like this? She asked them and one of the children replied, Mother, the owner of this house came around this morning and we overhead him talking about this house's roof renovation, he said that he will send his sons tomorrow to come and change the roof, and the rest of the children now chorused in one voice, Mother where do we go from here? Where shall we stay if our house here gets destroyed? moreover we are still too tender that we can't even walk on our own. After listening to her children, the mother rat told them, don't worry my children, no one is coming here tomorrow to destroy our house, so please don't be worried. The tomorrow came and behold throughout that day no one was there to change the roof, this made them so happy because it happened exactly as their mother told them.
So many days passed by yet no one came in respect of the roof renovation, the rat and her children were living happily. One day their mother came back again from the forest as usual and met her children looking exactly as the other day (worried and afraid) she was concerned and then she asked them, are you all alright? Did anything bad happen when i was away? and they said to her, Mother, the owner of this house was here again today still saying the same thing he said the other day, that he will send labourers tomorrow morning to come and change this house's roof, their mother smiled and again gave them her word, don't be afraid my children, worry not because by tomorrow our house will still remain intact, no one will come here tomorrow to change this house's roof, so you all should stop panicking, and again it happened exactly as she said, the labourers didn't later show up and so they kept living in peace and days was passing by.
One day again the rat came back from the forest and saw all her children worried, because of this same mood she could guess right what happened, so she decided to ask them, Was this house's owner here again today? They said yes, and what did he say this time around? She asked, they told her that he said he will be coming here tomorrow morning to change the roof, this caught their mother's attention and she asked them, who did he say he will be sending by tomorrow morning? And they replied her that the man said that he has waisted a lot of his time depending on others but now he will be coming to do it himself, but mother we know that as usual no one will be coming to chase us away, but their mother said to them, no my children we will have to leave this place immediately and find somewhere else to stay because this house's owner will definitely be here tomorrow, and the children now said, but mother this is the same thing he has being saying all this while but at the end no one will show up, so why do you sound so sure that he will be coming tomorrow?
The mother now said to them, for the first time he depended on his sons to do the work, the second time he depended on some labourers to do the job, and when you depend on others to do your work for you, your work can never be completed, but you see this time around he will be coming to do it himself, therefore tomorrow he will be here no doubt.
By this time her children are now mature enough to walk by themselves, so they all left the house to another safe place, and then the next morning the house's owner came as he said and he also came along with his two sons plus the labourers, they were able to do their work, they changed the whole house's roof and also went home on time but by then the rat and her children had left the house for good.
Moral lessons:
In life try and avoid this four things:
1. Waiting and hoping on others
2. Being lazy
3. Procrastination
4. Believing that you can achieve something without working for it.
And as we can see in this story that was exactly what happened to this house owner. He was depending on others to get his own work done for him even when he knows fully well that he could do it. We should learn not to wait, hope and believe foolishly on others, now just look at what happened in the story, immediately he made up his mind to go do the work by himself that was when his sons and the labourers came through, don't wait for others to motivate you before motivating yourself.
It is said that heaven helps only those who help themselves and that's just the truth believe it or not. People will only be ready to help, support and sponsor you when they see that you have made a step, you don't expect someone else to lay the foundation of your own success for you, always do the architectural part first then trust me every other things will start falling in place as you keep pushing, of course you shouldn't expect it to be easy, life itself is not and have never been easy.
Hope you enjoyed the story, i believe you learnt something from it as well, do let us know what you think about this story in the comment section below, feel free to add your own moral lessons.
